WHY TEACH IN MARLBORO COUNTY

RECRUITMENT RETENTION BONUS

#1. A new hire and career educator may qualify for the hiring bonus of $7,500.

  • Requires a four-year commitment (career educators with student achievement data only)

INCENTIVES FOR CRITICAL NEED GEOGRAPHIC AREA

Marlboro County School District is designated as a critical need geographic area the South Carolina Department of Education. Therefore, teachers employed by MCSD may be eligible for the opportunities below.

> RETIREMENT EARNINGS LIMITATION EXEMPTION 

A retired member of the South Carolina system may return to employment covered by the system without affecting the monthly retirement allowance she/he is receiving from the system if the retired member is a certified teacher and is employed by a school district to teach in the classroom in his area of certification in a critical academic need area or geographic need area as defined by the SC State Board of Education. > LOAN FORGIVENESS

Borrowers who received a South Carolina Teachers Loan or a SC PACE Loan may be eligible to forgive portions of their loan indebtedness by teaching in certain critical geographic and subject areas in the SC public school system. Please contact South Carolina Student Loan services for information on these loan programs, applications, and loan forgiveness.

RECIPROCITY FOR OUT OF STATE RETIRED TEACHERS

Educators who present a current standard out-of-state certification/certificate are eligible for a comparable South Carolina professional certificate if they have at least three school years of teaching experience credit in an acceptable position (see Professional Certification Eligibility) in the last seven years on that valid standard certificate.

ALTERNATIVE CERTIFICATION 

There are several programs for Alternative Certification. 

Please note that candidates have to possess a degree in a qualifying area or be able to obtain certification via the CATE work-based certification program.

There is also the Program of Alternative Certification for Educators (PACE) available to enable degreed individuals, who otherwise do not meet certification requirements, to gain employment in the public schools in a PACE approved subject area teaching position.
